Philosoplay is a small, online video game company founded in 2013 by Anthony Powell, a independent game developer living in Maryland. Anthony started this company as a way to express his passion of transforming ideas, thoughts or dreams into interactive experiences to share with the world!
In 2001, i stumbled upon my passion of making games while working as a cashier of a grocery store along side my friend Josh from high school. Josh started talking to me about how he makes video games in his spare time and began to explain the process. While I’ve been playing video games my whole life, i never actually tried to make one before. I was so fascinated by the idea of making my own game that i continued to ask questions, explore theories and imagine concepts of game design and the process of creating them.
After our work shift was over, Josh invited me over to his house to show me how to use RPG Maker 95, the software he uses to make games. Josh introduced me to his brother Ben, who also made games as a 3D artist and later taught me how to make 3D models in 3DS Max. Josh explained the basics of if/then statements, while loops, sprites, frames, animations and other game design terms. I absorbed all the information i could and before we all knew it, the sun had come up and it was time for me to head home to get some sleep. Of course, when i arrived home, i said “to hell with sleep” and downloaded RPG Maker 95 and began making my own game, lol.
As they say “After that, the rest is history”, I continued to pursue this medium of interactive expression as a hobbyist for 12 years. I learned everything from Programming, 3D Modeling, Texturing, Rigging, Animations, Game Design, Quality Assurance, Online Networking etc. Ive worked solo and on teams to create Mods while attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Game Art and Design in 2010. In 2013, while living in San Francisco, i went into business for myself with the creation of Philosoplay and shortly after, moved to Maryland to grow my company to what it is now! Currently, i am exploring video game development opportunities in educational games related to STEM along side of developing my own in-house games. The most recent educational game I developed for the Maryland Stem Festival is call Agronomics along-side developing a game called “That Rock Paper Scissors Game!” (working title).
